Comics
Pen and Eye is a journalistic comic written by me and drawn by the artist Marie Bouassi. Combining research, investigative reporting, and storytelling, Pen and Eye covers homelessness, housing policy, and related social justice issues. Pen and Eye has appeared in Seattle Magazine and Real Change, and a compilation of our work, Sweeps Kill, has sold out several print runs.
Having given a talk to her students, the Pen and Eye team is currently collaborating with Dr. Megan Welsh Carroll of San Diego State University to present her research on water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH) as a full-length comic book and public awareness campaign.
We are available to help tell your story, too. Got a press release, annual report, or white paper? If you want to truly stand out and engage your audience, why not present it as a comic?
Research papers
As the senior global health editor for a small agency that serves the Gates Foundation, I research and write about issues such as nutrition, anemia, and infectious diseases, making these topics engaging for both the general public and the specialist. I also edit the research papers of others to help get them accepted by scholarly publications.
Here's a recent comment from Drishti Sharma, a scholar at the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), whose work on childhood stunting I helped prepare for publication: “Thank you, David, for your thorough review and insightful feedback. I truly value your expertise and your dedication to ensuring this paper's accuracy and clarity.”
White papers
White papers? BOR-ing! Well, most of them anyway. Not mine. I specialize in whitepapers that are accessible and hooky like magazine articles, without sacrificing rigor and accuracy. Businesses depend on whitepapers to credentialize themselves and advertise their expertise to current and prospective customers. But serious and important shouldn't mean boring.
Ghostwriting: books, articles, and
op-eds
I have written a number of books, including one that Publishers Weekly called “a wickedly addictive read,” and can write one for you. I have ghost-written for the philanthropist Jeff Raikes. You decide the audience, style, and length, and, after we talk about it until I understand what you want, I do all the work.

Video scripts
In addition to videos I scripted that were embedded in the Windows operating system for an audience of hundreds of millions, I co-wrote and produced a number of low-budget horror shorts (password to see this video: daniel). I will collaborate with your video producers or supply my own, and work within your budget and brand/voice parameters to develop something that wastes no time connecting with your audience.
Oral history zines
Using photos, documents, and interviews, I have created a series of oral history and memorial zines for birthdays, deaths, and other occasions. I can do this for you, to memorialize a loved one, create a lasting piece of family history, or help you process your grief. I will do interviews and collect materials, commission illustrations, do all the writing and layouts, and present you with as many copies of the finished product as you want. A wide range of styles are possible, from elevated and dignified to punk rock madness.
